One of the great strengths of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is its diversity of sectors of activity. They include:

Water Environment
THE EXCEPTIONAL ASSETS OF THE PROVENCE-ALPES-COTE D’AZUR REGION
• The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region has a long history of managing water. It has a very particular system based on forecasting: integrated water management, which was begun in ancient times and the early Middle Ages with the canals of Lower Provence.
• With major engineering works on the rivers Verdon and Durance, and a shared understanding about water, this model has helped to avert droughts and to ensure a rational use of land across the entire region.
• It was designed as a whole, when this region was still very rural with only 2 million inhabitants, to fulfil many purposes (irrigation, drinking water, etc.) and it works even now with nearly 5 million inhabitants, because people have been able to develop it and adapter it for use by industry, to produce electricity and most recently for tourist activities.
• This centuries-old expertise in managing water exists today in a fabric of technological skills and knowledge and world-famous expertise. In addition, a competitiveness cluster on water was set up in June 2010, bringing together the industrial and scientific strengths of three regions: Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. In the PACA region, this cluster is based on the PRIDES (Regional cluster for innovation and mutually supportive economic development) EA Eco-businesses, which represents more than 50 small and medium-sized businesses involved with water.

KEY FIGURES FOR THE SECTOR
• 4th region in France for eco-industry.
• 128 businesses involved in consultancy, research, engineering, equipment, supply, infrastructure, water treatment and sanitation, testing, measurement and analysis.
• About 5,000 jobs in the water sector (12,500 in all in the environmental professions).
• 26 centres of R&D and university laboratories.
• 23 initial and ongoing training centres.
• 60 FE courses in environment and sustainable development offered by the universities of the region: BTS, DEUST, DEA, DESS…
